Animal protectors warn of risks to black and white pets in October

Animal welfare advocates are advising pet owners to keep black and white dogs and cats indoors during October. This recommendation is a preventive measure against potential animal abuse, theft, or the use of animals in rituals associated with Halloween, All Saints' Day, and the Day of the Dead.

Historically, black cats have been linked to witchcraft and the supernatural due to European medieval superstitions. While some cultures, such as those in Japan and the United Kingdom, view black cats as symbols of good fortune, the association with the occult remains a concern for rescuers. In the UK, the organization Cats Protection established National Black Cat Day on October 27 to promote visibility and adoption for these animals.

In regions like Ecuador, animal protection laws exist to sanction the mistreatment or death of urban fauna. Due to these seasonal risks, some shelters may increase monitoring of their animals or temporarily postpone adoptions during this period to ensure safety.
