Animal rescue efforts intensify following earthquakes in Colombia and Venezuela

Following recent seismic activity in South America, animal welfare organizations and government agencies are managing significant humanitarian needs for pets and domestic animals.

In Valle del Cauca, Colombia, authorities have provided assistance to more than 7,300 animals following an earthquake on August 10. A collaborative effort involving the Governor's Office, the Cali Mayor's Office, the Civil Defense, and volunteer veterinarians has focused on rescuing animals from damaged buildings, providing medical assessments, and distributing food and medicine. Efforts also include reuniting separated pets with their owners.

In Venezuela, two months after powerful earthquakes in La Guaira left thousands dead, approximately 700 animals remain in shelters awaiting adoption. Rescued from rubble during magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 tremors in June, many animals suffer from physical injuries, dehydration, and psychological trauma such as anxiety or shock. The Misión Nevado shelter in La Guaira is currently operating at maximum capacity, with volunteers working to provide veterinary care, vaccinations, and deworming while seeking new homes for the animals.
