Animal Rights Activists Demand End to Cruel Spectacle in Mexico and Rescue of Trapped Pets in Spain

Activists from the Coalition of Animal Rights for Veracruz (Cadav) gathered in Santiago Tuxtla, Mexico, to call for the cancellation of the planned "cerdo encebado" event slated for July 23. They argued the spectacle violates federal and state animal‑protection statutes, including the Mexican Constitution and Veracruz’s laws that recognize animals as sentient beings, and criticized the municipal government for approving the event after signing an animal‑welfare pledge.

In Benetússer, Valencia, Spain, animal‑defence groups, together with local neighbourhood associations and political parties, held a protest demanding the rescue of five cats and a turtle trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building. Protesters urged authorities to adopt a state protocol that ensures animals receive emergency assistance during disasters, highlighting the lack of official response to the trapped pets.
