Animal rights activists launch protests against UK farming practices

Animal rights activists in the United Kingdom are conducting high-profile protests to draw attention to intensive farming practices. In London, Michelle Farnham, a campaign lead for Animal Rising, spent 21 consecutive days and nights inside a pig farrowing crate in Trafalgar Square. The installation was intended to mirror the confinement experienced by mother pigs in factory farms and to pressure the government to end factory farming by 2040.

Separately, three activists, including Rosa Sharkey, are on trial at Norwich Crown Court for the theft of three lambs from the King’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Sharkey stated that the group took the animals to “open his eyes” to the realities of sheep farming and slaughterhouse conditions, arguing that the King’s influence could lead to changes in practices and wider industry conversations.
