Animal welfare advocates report rising neglect and abuse in Romania and the UK

Animal welfare advocates in Romania and the United Kingdom are raising alarms over escalating crises involving animal neglect and abuse.

In Romania, more than 70 nongovernmental organizations marched in Bucharest to demand stronger protections for stray animals. Campaigners are calling on Dr. Alexandru Nicolae Bociu, President of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, to improve shelter standards, expand sterilization programs, and strengthen the prosecution of those responsible for cruelty. Advocates highlight issues with uncontrolled breeding and inadequate management of the country’s stray population.

In the United Kingdom, the RSPCA has reported a 15 per cent increase in cases involving large numbers of animals kept at single properties. The charity is seeing an average of 410 cases per month where ten or more animals are housed together, often in appalling conditions. Recent rescues included a home with over 250 dogs and another in Tickhill where animals were found living in extreme filth. These mounting numbers have left rescue centers overwhelmed, leading to urgent appeals for more foster carers and adopters.
