Animal welfare groups demand legislative reforms in Spain
Animal welfare organizations and professionals are calling for significant legislative changes regarding animal protection in Spain. In San Sebastián, the political party PACMA led a demonstration demanding that hunting dogs be included under the national Animal Welfare Law. Spokesperson Asier Esparza criticized recent amendments that excluded working and hunting dogs from legal protections, describing the move as a concession to hunting sectors.
Separately, over fifty organizations and experts have submitted a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas. The group is urging the Spanish government to advocate for an ambitious reform of European regulations concerning the transport of live animals. The initiative, which has gathered nearly 2,000 citizen signatures, seeks to reduce travel times, increase space, and provide better protection against extreme temperatures during transit.
