Animal welfare groups face backlash amid rising dog attack incidents

Following a series of dog attack incidents in Hong Kong, including a fatal attack in Ta Kwu Ling, animal welfare groups are facing increased public hostility and complaints. An animal rescue group hosting a weekly adoption event for local dogs in Tsuen Wan reported receiving emails from citizens demanding the event be canceled.

The hotel hosting the event did not comply with the complaints, allowing the adoption drive to proceed. The group's organizer, Ms. Yang, expressed frustration over the growing anti-dog sentiment, noting that local dogs often struggle to find homes compared to foreign breeds. She also addressed calls for genetic testing of local dogs to rule out fighting breed lineages, arguing that such labeling unfairly targets innocent animals.

Social media influencer Angus Chan also spoke out against generalizing the behavior of all large or local dogs based on specific incidents, urging the public to focus on why certain dangerous dogs are present in the city rather than stigmatizing all local breeds.
