Animal welfare groups in Mexico suspend black pet adoptions for Halloween
Animal rights organizations across Mexico, including groups in Tijuana, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Chihuahua, are implementing temporary restrictions on the adoption of black and white dogs and cats. This measure is a preventative response to the increased risk of animal cruelty, torture, or ritual sacrifices linked to Halloween and Day of the Dead superstitions.
Shelters and advocacy groups, such as Abogados Animalistas México and the Patitas Firmes refuge, are reinforcing adoption filters through stricter questionnaires and follow-up agreements. The goal is to prevent animals from falling into the hands of individuals with harmful intentions. Authorities have also been urged to increase surveillance, particularly for stray animals that lack direct human protection during this period.
