Animal welfare incidents reported in Colombia and Peru
In Colombia, two dogs—a Pomeranian and a Pitbull-type puppy—were abandoned at El Dorado International Airport by a couple traveling from Miami to Cali. The abandonment occurred following complications with the required documentation during an inspection by the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA). The animals, aged approximately five and six months, were taken into protection by the Instituto Distrital de Protección y Bienestar Animal (IDPYBA) for veterinary assessment. Authorities are investigating the documentation irregularities and seeking to hold the owners responsible.
In Peru, authorities rescued 48 bulldogs from a suspected clandestine breeding operation in San Juan de Miraflores, Lima. The rescue, conducted by the National Police of Peru and the Public Ministry, revealed animals living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, suffering from malnutrition, skin diseases, and heatstroke. Investigators discovered that some dogs had undergone vocal cord surgery to prevent barking from alerting neighbors. The operation suggests a scheme where females were used continuously for breeding to sell puppies online.
