Animal welfare organizations in Colombia and Guatemala combat abandonment

Animal welfare organizations in Colombia and Guatemala are utilizing community support and literary initiatives to combat rising rates of animal abandonment.

In Inírida, Colombia, the Fundación Compañeros de Planeta currently cares for 219 dogs and 72 cats. Founder Dianey Tavera Montoya reports that the organization faces increasing challenges as more abandoned, injured, or sick animals arrive. The foundation relies heavily on community donations and personal funds to cover monthly food costs, which can reach 10 million pesos.

In Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, the Asociación Amigo Fiel has launched a solidarity campaign titled ‘Dos libros que también dejan huella’. In collaboration with writer Mariano Cantoral, the association is donating 25% of the proceeds from the sale of two books—‘Lágrimas azules’ and ‘Necropsia a corazón abierto’—to support rescued and abandoned dogs.
