Animal‑rights protests erupt in Mexico and Venezuela demanding tougher cruelty laws

The protest follows shocking cases such as a disemboweled chow‑chow and the poisoning of a pack of dogs and a cat in the Los Kilómetros district, which organizers say illustrate the inadequacy of current penalties.

On 25 July in Caracas, Venezuela, animal‑rights supporters gathered at Plaza Candelaria to call for justice after the killing of Mariposa, a rescued dog that was murdered in a temporary home. Demonstrators pressed for the swift passage of a stricter “Law Mariposa” to protect companion animals, citing recent violent incidents against pets across the country.

Both demonstrations are part of a broader national movement urging governments to strengthen legal protection for sentient animals and impose harsher punishments on offenders.
