Anime director Rintaro named Cultural Merit Person in Japan

The Japanese government has named the renowned animation director Rintaro as a Cultural Merit Person for 2026. The announcement, made on October 23, recognizes his significant contributions to the development of television animation.

Born Shigeyuki Hayashi, the 85-year-old director began his career in 1958 at Toei Animation before working at Mushi Production on the series Astro Boy. He is widely recognized for directing the 1979 film Galaxy Express 999, based on the manga by Leiji Matsumoto. His notable body of work also includes Metropolis, Yona Yona Penguin, and Harmagedon.

Following a 14-year hiatus from directing, Rintaro returned in 2023 with the short film Nezumikozo Jirokichi. He is also set to provide the original story concept for a new Galaxy Express 999 film announced by Toei Animation.
