Anime industry sees growth in historical fantasy and prestige drama

The global anime landscape is experiencing a cultural renaissance, with increasing international demand for character-driven historical fantasy and prestige dramas. While supernatural action epics remain popular, there is a growing audience for narratives prioritizing emotional authenticity and period aesthetics.

Kinema Citrus's ‘My Happy Marriage’, based on the light novel series by Akumi Agitogi and illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka, has become a global sensation. Following the conclusion of its second season in April 2025, Kadokawa confirmed that a three-episode special aired in Japan on October 25, 2026, with a simultaneous worldwide stream, marking the next step in the series' development.
