Anime industry sees growth in theatrical releases and streaming market share

The global anime market is experiencing significant growth in both theatrical and streaming sectors. Crunchyroll is preparing an aggressive 2027 theatrical slate that could bolster Sony's position in the film industry. The reported lineup includes ‘Witch on the Holy Night’, slated for a January 29 release in the U.S. and Canada, as well as tentative releases for ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle 2’ in September and ‘Solo Leveling: Beyond the System’ in October.

Simultaneously, data from Media Partners Asia indicates that anime has become the leading genre on Asian streaming platforms. Between July 2025 and August 2026, anime viewership grew rapidly, with Netflix seeing anime engagement grow nine times faster than its overall service. The success of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ has significantly increased the market share for studio MAPPA, which saw its regional anime hours rise from 6.1% to 17.3% in the first half of 2026, positioning it as a leading studio in the region.
