India and Canada aim to elevate bilateral ties following UNGA meetings

India and Canada are working to elevate their bilateral relationship following a period of diplomatic tension. During the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, describing their discussion as “productive” and signaling a move toward a “higher level” of engagement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that trade negotiations are making “good progress.” Both nations are working toward concluding the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026. A key objective of this renewed cooperation is to more than double bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030.

Further strengthening ties, Prime Minister Carney indicated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada around December 2026. The diplomatic roadmap includes expanded cooperation in energy, critical minerals, security, technology, and education.
