Anita Mui ashes missing from Hong Kong monastery

Anita Mui ashes theft Po Lin Monastery Cantopop Hong Kong police

The family of legendary Cantopop singer Anita Mui has issued an urgent appeal following the disappearance of her ashes from a columbarium niche at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. The discovery was made by a fan on July 18, who noticed that the screws on the memorial plaque had been loosened and the urn was missing.

Despite the police investigation being underway for nearly three months, no arrests have been made and no progress has been reported. The family expressed profound heartbreak, noting that the incident follows the recent death of Mui's 102-year-old mother in August. Mui's brother, Peter Mui Kai-ming, has offered a reward of 50,000 HKD for any information that leads to the recovery of the ashes.

The family and international fan clubs are calling for public assistance, specifically requesting that anyone who visited the Po Lin Monastery or the Pagode Hoi Wu between January and mid-July 2026 come forward. They are also asking motorists to review dashcam footage from that period for any suspicious activity near the monastery.
