Anja Silja to receive lifetime achievement award
Soprano Anja Silja will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Austrian Music Theater Awards on September 8 at the Votivkirche in Vienna. The 86-year-old singer is recognized as one of the most influential voices in the opera world of recent decades.
Award initiator Karl-Michael Ebner noted that Silja did not merely interpret roles but “appropriated them” with a directness that explored the contradictions and depths of her characters. The ceremony will also honor former Salzburg Festival director Markus Hinterhäuser with the Jury Grand Prize.
Silja’s career includes a significant period at Bayreuth, where she maintained a close artistic connection with Wieland Wagner. Following his death in 1966, she expanded her repertoire to include roles such as Micaela in ‘Carmen’ and the Queen of the Night in ‘The Magic Flute’.
