Ankara bans protests and drone flights ahead of July NATO summit

The Ankara governor announced extensive security restrictions for the 36th NATO Leaders' Summit scheduled for 7‑8 July 2026. From 28 June to 10 July, unauthorized vehicles and persons are barred from designated zones, all drone flights in Ankara’s airspace are prohibited without a governor’s permit, and public gatherings—including meetings, demonstrations, sit‑ins, hunger strikes, and distribution of flyers or banners—are banned under the 2911 and 5442 laws.

Ahead of the summit, the left‑wing Halkın Kurtuluş Partisi (HKP) said it will hold a demonstration on 5 July at the Ulus site in front of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The party’s statement urged citizens to confront “the imperialist crime organization NATO” and called for a “national militia” response, quoting: “Halkımızı… ABD ve AB emperyalistlerinin suç ve katliam örgütü NATO'ya … karşı kuvayi milliye geleneğini kuşanmaya çağırıyoruz.”
