Ankara 2nd Bar Association President faces scrutiny over judicial appointment claims

Gökhan Ağdemir, the President of the Ankara 2nd Bar Association, has sparked significant controversy following admissions that he provided references for lawyers to become judges and prosecutors. Ağdemir stated that during his two-year term, approximately 70 bar members were appointed to these judicial roles, claiming that the Ministry of Justice granted the association privileges in this regard.

The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from various legal and political entities. The Istanbul Bar Association announced plans to file a criminal complaint, asserting that the judiciary should not be a site for political staffing and that such claims undermine judicial independence. The Judges' Union also issued a statement emphasizing that judicial appointments must be based on merit rather than institutional privileges.

In response to the backlash, Ağdemir announced his withdrawal from his candidacy for re-election at the Ankara 2nd Bar Association. He claimed his comments were taken out of context and intended to highlight the association's support for young lawyers' professional development. Meanwhile, members of the Turkish Parliament have submitted inquiries to the Ministry of Justice, demanding transparency regarding the appointment processes and whether any preferential reference mechanisms were utilized.
