Ankara family files criminal complaint over 19-year misdiagnosis claim

A family from Mersin has filed a criminal complaint with the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against a genetic center, alleging a 19-year cycle of misdiagnoses affecting two children. The family claims that the center provided incorrect diagnoses, such as Angelman Syndrome, which led to nearly two decades of inappropriate medical treatments and educational plans.

The family's lawyer, Handan Sayan Özgür, stated that the legal filing includes charges of “forgery of private documents” and “fraud.” According to the allegations, the center reportedly changed diagnoses over time and failed to align its findings with international test results. The lawyer further alleged that the center requested significant sums of money, approximately 3,000 to 4,000 USD per person, for re-testing.

The two children are currently reported to have 100% disabilities, suffering from seizures and a total dependence on their family for daily life. The family contends that these conditions were exacerbated by the lack of access to correct diagnoses and appropriate medical care. The legal investigation is ongoing.
