Ankara hospital reports serious burns from brake cleaner misuse

Associate Professor Sabri Demir, the burn specialist at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, has reported four cases of serious burns caused by the misuse of brake cleaner spray over the past two weeks. According to Demir, the victims suffered injuries after using the product for purposes other than its intended use, specifically for lighting barbecues and as part of pranks.

Demir emphasized that brake cleaners are specialized chemical products designed for cleaning brake pads. They contain solvents and propellant gases that are highly flammable and volatile. He warned that using these products near open flames, such as cigarettes, lighters, or stoves, can cause sudden and severe fires.

In addition to fire risks, Demir noted that inhaling the gases from these sprays can lead to toxic effects. He advised that the product should never be used in enclosed spaces and recommended that users wear protective gloves and goggles to ensure safety.
