Erdal Beşikçioğlu detained in Etimesgut corruption probe
Erdal Beşikçioğlu, the mayor of Etimesgut in Ankara and a member of the opposition CHP, was taken into custody as part of a large‑scale corruption investigation launched by the Ankara Batı Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı’s Organized Crime Investigation Bureau. The operation resulted in the arrest of 55 people – 42 municipal officials and 13 company representatives – who were later transferred to court.
Authorities allege that Beşikçioğlu and others were involved in forming an illegal organization and committing crimes such as embezzlement, bribery, bid‑rigging and interference with procurement, parking‑lease contracts and building permits. In his police statement, Beşikçioğlu denied all charges, saying he had no authority over municipal tenders and that he had not participated in any price‑setting activities.
He claimed a monthly income of 2.5 million Turkish lira, attributing the amount to his mayoral salary, earnings from the theatre production “Tatbikat Sahnesi”, acting work and royalties. Financial analysis of his bank accounts, however, showed no regular inflows matching that figure; the records indicated external transfers of about 6.1 million lira in 2024 and 9.5 million lira in 2025. Beşikçioğlu also listed extensive personal assets, including properties in Ünye (Ordu), Çeşme, Urla, İzmir, Istanbul, Ankara and Ayvalık, two motorcycles and an Audi A6, which he said were acquired through savings and inheritance.
The probe, seen by opposition figures as part of a broader crackdown on CHP officials ahead of upcoming elections, remains ongoing.
