Ankara Municipalities Expand Local Food Production with Garden Harvests and Buckwheat Crop

Keçiören Municipality in Ankara operates a 20‑decare garden and a 17‑decare fruit orchard that grow 27 varieties of vegetables and fruits. Harvested produce is cleaned, packaged under hygienic conditions and sent to the municipal guest‑house kitchen, providing fresh, locally sourced meals and demonstrating a sustainable, farm‑to‑table model for the district.

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality’s ATA Farm has completed its first buckwheat (karabuğday) harvest. The gluten‑free grain, valued for both food and bee nutrition, is being trialled for contract farming with a goal to expand to about 10,000 decares by 2027. Plans include processing the grain into flour and supporting beekeeping research, creating a new income stream for local farmers and enhancing Ankara’s agricultural diversity.
