Ankara organizations warn of poverty crisis following retiree death

Following the death of retired police officer Ali Şekeroğlu during a protest by retirees in front of the Constitutional Court in Ankara, various organizations have issued warnings regarding the impact of poverty on public health and social stability.

Halkevleri held a press statement on Yüksel Street, arguing that the economic conditions forcing retirees into debt and inability to meet basic needs are a systemic issue rather than an individual one. They highlighted a significant gap between the minimum pension and the cost of living, noting that the projected minimum pension for July 2026 remains below the monthly food expenditure required for a family of four.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) also released a statement characterizing poverty as a public health crisis. The TTB emphasized that economic insecurity, insufficient income, and lack of social guarantees directly impair physical and mental health by increasing anxiety and despair. The association called on the government to implement social policies that eliminate precariousness and ensure that pensions and wages are sufficient for a dignified life.
