Ankara Painter Muhammed Yalçın Turns Home into Gallery Amid Funding Struggles

Muhammed Yalçın, a man born with a 70% mental disability, has been painting since 2009. Living in Altındağ, Ankara, he extended his art beyond canvases to cover the interior and exterior walls of his two‑storey house, creating a vibrant, gallery‑like environment filled with animal figures, natural scenes and original designs.

Yalçın sells his paintings to support himself, drawing visitors from across Turkey and abroad—estimates suggest around three thousand people have toured his home‑gallery. Recently, however, he has been unable to purchase art supplies due to high material costs. His father, Hasan Yalçın, says the artist needs financial assistance, while local advocate Nurşen Bektaş urges state and institutional support to keep the project alive.
