İzmit Mayor Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet Detained in Corruption Probe

Turkey's anti‑corruption authorities have detained İzmit Mayor Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet and her husband Murat Hürriyet, along with 18 other suspects, as part of a large‑scale investigation into alleged bribery, tender fraud and organized‑crime activities linked to the municipality. The probe, coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, led to simultaneous raids in Kocaeli, Istanbul, Antalya, Ankara and Kırıkkale, resulting in the arrest of 30‑31 people, including CHP İzmit district chief Gökhan Ercan.

The suspects face charges of “forming an organization for the purpose of committing crimes,” “bribery” and “tampering with public tenders.” After health checks, 20 of the detainees were ordered jailed by a court in Çağlayan, while nine were released under judicial control. The mayor was transferred to prison on 23 July. CHP Kocaeli leader Erdem Arcan condemned the proceedings as a breach of justice and democracy, calling for the release of the detained officials.
