Physical therapy experts recommend ankle exercises to prevent falls
Physical therapy experts emphasize the importance of ankle dorsiflexion and leg strength to prevent falls and improve mobility, particularly for individuals over the age of 60.
To combat the risk of tripping on uneven surfaces or rugs, specialists recommend training the ability to lift the front of the foot while keeping the heels grounded. This movement relies on the tibialis anterior muscle, which can weaken with age due to changes in muscle mass and neuromuscular response. A simple exercise involves standing near a chair for balance and performing controlled toe lifts.
General leg strengthening is also vital for stability and injury prevention. Recommended exercises include squats, lunges, deadlifts, calf raises, and leg presses. Maintaining strong leg muscles supports the body's base, improves endurance, and helps protect against injuries during daily activities.
