Şanlıurfa agriculture transforms through GAP irrigation

Agricultural production in Şanlıurfa is undergoing a significant transformation due to irrigation investments implemented under the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP). The availability of irrigation water has converted vast areas previously used for dry farming into productive land, leading to increased crop diversity across the region.

While traditional crops like wheat, corn, and cotton were previously dominant, farmers are now cultivating a wider range of high-value products. This includes peanuts, sunflowers, rice, garlic, various vegetables, and different fruit types. Local producers have noted that the ability to plant multiple crops per year has improved, with some shifting from corn to sunflowers to achieve better profit margins.

Agricultural engineer Mehmet Bilgin observed that since the introduction of GAP irrigation water in 2014, the crop pattern has shifted significantly. In areas like the Suruç Plain, the transition from traditional staples to more diverse options such as oilseed and confectionery sunflowers is becoming increasingly evident.
