Şanlıurfa earthquake strikes Karaköprü district in southeastern Turkey
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa province in southeastern Turkey at 10:40 local time. The tremor was felt across multiple provinces, including Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Malatya, Mardin, Siirt, Şırnak, and Batman, as well as in parts of Syria and Iraq.
While the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported a magnitude of 5.4 at a depth of approximately 7.4 kilometers, the Istanbul Kandilli Observatory measured the magnitude at 5.8. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) initially estimated the magnitude at 5.1 with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Şanlıurfa Governor Hasan Şıldak reported that there were no immediate deaths or major structural collapses, though some buildings in the Pınarbaşı area sustained cracks and minor damage. As a precaution, authorities ordered a 24-hour suspension of classes in schools, kindergartens, and daycare centers throughout Şanlıurfa to allow for structural inspections and to reduce public panic.
