Şanlıurfa hospital performs first successful scoliosis surgery

Medical professionals at Şanlıurfa Training and Research Hospital have successfully performed the facility's first scoliosis surgery. The complex procedure, which lasted approximately 10 hours, was led by neurosurgeon Op. Dr. Oğuz Akçakülü and his team to correct a severe three-dimensional spinal deformity in an 18-year-old female patient.

The patient had a complex medical history, including a previous surgery for a tumor in the posterior fossa region at the same hospital and a prior spinal operation at a different center. Following a period of monitoring, doctors identified significant scoliosis and decided on surgical intervention to restore spinal balance and natural alignment.

Dr. Akçakülü noted that scoliosis involves the rotation of vertebrae around their own axes, rather than just a lateral curve. The surgery utilized comprehensive neuromonitoring to prevent complications. The operation was completed without neurological issues, and the patient is reported to be in good condition.
