Şanlıurfa teenager dies after being swept away in irrigation canal

A 16-year-old boy, Mehmet Raşit Atay, has died after being swept away by a strong current in an irrigation canal near the Esenyayla neighborhood in the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa. Witnesses reported seeing the teenager struggling in the water before he disappeared.

Search and rescue operations involved multiple agencies, including AFAD, the Şanlıurfa Search and Rescue (ŞUAK) team, the fire department, gendarmerie, and medical services. Following an extensive search using underwater equipment and divers, ŞUAK teams located the boy's body. He was transported to the Şanlıurfa Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. A judicial investigation has been launched regarding the incident.
