Ann Hui receives Camellia Award at Busan International Film Festival

Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui was honored with the Camellia Award at the opening of the Busan International Film Festival. During a press conference, Hui reflected on her career in a male-dominated industry and the evolution of Hong Kong cinema.

Hui credited her early success to five female mentors—including company executives and actresses—who provided her with the freedom and support necessary to establish herself in the 1970s. She noted that while she encountered less supportive individuals later in her career, these early female leaders were instrumental to her development.

Beginning her career at the broadcaster TVB, Hui transitioned from television to award-winning feature films. Her notable works include the Vietnamese boat people trilogy, ‘A Simple Life’, and ‘The Golden Era’. Her recent documentary, ‘Elegies’, focused on Hong Kong poetry.
