Anna Atkins and the enduring legacy of cyanotype photography
The legacy of Anna Atkins, the 19th-century British botanist and pioneer of cyanotype photography, continues to influence both visual arts and music. Atkins is credited with producing what is widely considered the first photographic book by using the cyanotype process to capture botanical specimens.
In the realm of literature and art history, a new Phaidon publication introduced by Fiona Rogers explores the history of women in photography. The work features 250 artists from 68 countries, ranging from early pioneers to contemporary figures, documenting their impact on portraiture, photojournalism, and fine art.
Musically, artist Emily A. Sprague draws inspiration from Atkins in her latest modular synthesizer ambient album, ‘Cyano’. Sprague uses electronic textures and fragmented lyrics to attempt to capture ephemeral sensations, mirroring the intuitive and scientific intersection found in Atkins’ original botanical studies.
