Anna Magnani: Legacy of an Italian cinema icon and animal lover

Anna Magnani, one of Italy’s most iconic actresses, passed away in Rome on September 26, 1973, at the age of 65. Known for her emotionally raw performances in films such as ‘Rome, Open City’ and ‘The Naked Rose’, she was the first Italian woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Beyond her cinematic achievements, Magnani was well known for her devotion to Rome’s stray cats. She frequently visited the ruins near Largo di Torre Argentina to feed and provide medical care for the city’s feline population, often using a scarf as a disguise to move through the streets unnoticed. She once remarked that she found more solace in animals than in people.

Magnani’s career spanned from early work in variety shows alongside Totò to major roles directed by Vittorio De Sica and Federico Fellini. Following her death, her funeral in Rome drew massive public demonstrations of affection.
