Annalena Baerbock criticizes UN Security Council transparency
Annalena Baerbock, concluding her one-year term as President of the UN General Assembly on September 8, has issued a formal letter criticizing the UN Security Council for a lack of transparency regarding the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. Baerbock noted that while preliminary voting results have leaked to the press, the Security Council has not officially released them, which she argues undermines the credibility of the process and harms the candidates.
In her proposal, Baerbock suggested granting the General Assembly more influence by requiring the Security Council to nominate multiple candidates rather than just one, allowing the 193 member states to make the final decision. Her calls for a more inclusive and structured selection process have previously drawn criticism from the United States and Russia, both of whom accused her of exceeding her authority and insisted on the Security Council's right to conduct secret deliberations.
Reflecting on her tenure, Baerbock addressed the significant political pressure and disinformation campaigns she faced, including sexist attacks and false claims about her personal life. She described her time as a candidate for Chancellor and as Foreign Minister as having felt like going 'through hell.' Following her departure from the UN, she is set to begin a new role as a professor at Columbia University in New York.
