Anne Carson awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian author, poet, and classicist Anne Carson. The award, worth SEK 12 million, recognizes her “bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”
Carson, born in Toronto in 1950, is noted for her genre-bending work that intersects philology and poetry. Her writing often incorporates scholarly commentary, lexicon entries, and translations of ancient Greek texts, such as works by Sophocles and Euripides, into her creative process. Her literary method is described as creating “literary constellations” by placing disparate historical figures and texts in dialogue with one another.
Her previous accolades include the T. S. Eliot Prize, the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature 2020, and fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations. Her notable works include Nox, Autobiography of Red, and Men in the Off Hours.
