Anne Carson awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet, essayist, and classical scholar Anne Carson. The Academy recognized her for her “bold and inventive body of work, recognising the new literary forms she has created through her playful engagement with classical traditions.”

Carson, 76, is the 19th woman to receive the prize and the second Canadian woman to win, following Alice Munro in 2013. Her work is noted for its refusal to adhere to traditional genre boundaries, frequently blending poetry, prose, translation, drama, and philosophy. She is well known for works such as ‘Autobiography of Red’, which reinterprets Greek myth, and ‘Nox’, written in memory of her brother, Michael.

The award includes a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor. Carson received the news while in Iceland. The formal award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Stockholm.
