Anne Carson awarded Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian-Icelandic poet and classics professor Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy recognized her for her bold and inventive work that engages in a playful dialogue with classical traditions, creating new forms for contemporary literature.

Carson’s career has been defined by her expertise in ancient Greek, often using the works of figures such as Sappho, Catullus, Euripides, and Aeschylus as foundations for her inventive translations and creative transformations. Her writing frequently blends poetry, prose, philosophy, and mythology to explore personal experiences and human existence.

Upon receiving the news via telephone while in Iceland, Carson expressed her happiness. She is scheduled to officially receive the prize in Stockholm on December 10. Her work is noted for its ability to bridge the gap between the ancient world and modern literary expression.
