Anne Carson wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet, essayist, and translator Anne Carson. The Academy honored her for her “bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Carson, 76, is a professor of classics who has taught at institutions including the University of Toronto, Princeton, and New York University. Her work is noted for blurring the boundaries between poetry, prose, essay, and translation, often reinterpreting ancient Greek and Latin texts through a modern lens. Notable works include “Autobiography of Red” and “Eros the Bittersweet.”

At the time of the announcement, Carson was in Iceland, where she holds citizenship. The prize includes a medal and 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately 1.2 million US dollars. She is the 19th woman to receive this distinction. The official award ceremony is scheduled for December 10, 2026, in Stockholm.
