Anne Frank diary controversy sparks backlash at São Paulo Book Biennial
A video recorded during the São Paulo Book Biennial has gone viral after a teenager criticized ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’ labeling the Holocaust victim a ‘victimizer.’ During an interview, the young woman cited Friedrich Nietzsche’s ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ as her favorite book and identified Anne Frank’s diary as her least favorite, suggesting the author was merely playing the victim.
The remarks prompted responses from several institutions. The Holocaust Museum issued a statement emphasizing the necessity of understanding the historical context of the diary, noting that the text is a record of a teenager subjected to Nazi persecution. The museum stated that a victim is not obligated to provide a ‘comfortable narrative’ and that the diary contains valid expressions of fear, anger, and contradiction rather than just an idealized story of overcoming hardship.
The Brazil-Israel Institute also addressed the controversy, highlighting the gap between a single opinion and the historical reality of the Holocaust.
