Annemarie Jacir presents film on 1936 Palestinian revolt
Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir is presenting her latest film, ‘Palestine 36’, which explores the historical roots of the regional conflict. Set during the spring of 1936 under the British Mandate, the film depicts the Great Arab Revolt, a period of mass strikes and resistance against British colonial policies and land expropriation.
Jacir describes the project as an effort to reclaim Palestinian memory and combat ‘archival violence.’ Because the Palestinian National Archive was confiscated in 1982, the director utilized British Pathé newsreel footage to reconstruct lost landscapes and historical moments. To breathe life into these archives, the production used colorization techniques to move beyond a purely documentary aesthetic.
