Annexon Biosciences' tanruprubart reduces ventilation and ICU stay in Guillain‑Barré trial
Researchers presented a new monoclonal antibody, tanruprubart, at the European Academy of Neurology Congress in Geneva. The drug blocks the complement protein C1q, disabling the classical pathway that contributes to nerve damage in Guillain‑Barré syndrome.
In a late‑stage clinical trial involving 241 recently diagnosed patients in Bangladesh and the Philippines, a single intravenous dose of tanruprubart shortened mechanical ventilation by an average of 28 days, reduced intensive‑care unit stay by seven days, and enabled patients to walk independently 31 days earlier than those receiving placebo. No serious adverse events were reported. Annexon Biosciences has filed for regulatory approval, positioning tanruprubart as the first targeted therapy for this rare autoimmune disorder, which affects 1–2 per 100,000 people worldwide.
