Annie Andrews responds to Trump's anti-transgender slur
South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews has released a new television advertisement in response to anti-transgender attacks from Donald Trump. The 30-second commercial features Andrews, a pediatrician and mother of three, addressing her record on gender-related issues.
In the ad, Andrews states, “I don’t support biological men playing women’s sports and I don’t support — and haven’t ever performed — gender surgery for minors.” This follows a social media post by Trump, who used a transgender slur to refer to Andrews, despite her not being a trans woman.
The race is becoming increasingly competitive as the Republican super PAC Senate Leadership Fund has committed $5 million to the contest. Andrews faces Republican Senator Darline Graham, who was appointed to the seat following the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham. Republicans have previously criticized Andrews for her 2022 opposition to a state law banning transgender athletes from participating in women's sports.
