Annita Demetriou withdraws from DISY leadership race
Annita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), has announced her decision to withdraw from the race for the party leadership ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Demetriou stated that her decision was made independently and without any external pressure or conditions.
She emphasized that her primary goal is to ensure the unity and cohesion of the party, acting as a “guardian of unity” to prevent potential internal divisions. Demetriou noted that a split within DISY would be catastrophic for both the party and the country, potentially undermining efforts for the upcoming presidential elections.
The announcement followed a meeting between Demetriou, former party leader Giorgos Pamboridis, and Averof Neofytou. While Demetriou clarified that she did not face pressure to withdraw, she acknowledged the concerns regarding party fragmentation. She maintained that democratic processes within the party will be respected and that the will of the members will be honored.
