Annunziata Hospital performs first single-port robotic splenectomy in Calabria
Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza has successfully performed the first single-port robotic splenectomy in the Calabria region. The procedure utilized the Da Vinci Single-Port system, allowing surgeons to remove the spleen through a single 2.5-centimeter incision.
The patient, a 42-year-old woman suffering from ovarian cancer recurrence, presented with a significantly enlarged spleen that occupied nearly the entire upper left abdomen. Due to the organ's size and complex anatomy, traditional surgical techniques would have carried high risks, but the robotic technology provided the necessary precision.
The operation was led by Professor Michele Morelli, head of Gynecological Oncological Surgery, alongside a medical team including doctors Azzarone, Filippelli, Maiarota, and Micieli. Hospital officials stated that this achievement demonstrates the high level of professional expertise available within the Calabrian healthcare system, providing patients with access to advanced surgical procedures locally.
