Andrej Babiš criticizes central bank and media funding changes

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has launched sharp criticisms against the Czech National Bank and the political opposition following recent election results and legislative moves. Babiš criticized the central bank's relationship with the state budget, suggesting that linking the two could double the deficit. He also addressed the opposition's outcry regarding a government plan to abolish television and radio license fees and transition public media financing to the state budget.

Babiš dismissed claims from opposition leaders, such as Vít Rakušan, that these changes threaten media independence or constitute an attack on democracy, labeling such arguments as "hysteria." He maintained that the move fulfills a pre-election promise and noted that 17 other EU countries do not utilize license fees.

In response to the legislative push, various groups have organized protests. The Milion Chvilek association called for demonstrations in Prague and Brno to oppose what they term the "statization" of media. Additionally, several Czech theaters, including the National Theatre, expressed solidarity with public broadcasters, warning that political control over funding could undermine freedom of speech.
