Anogeia Police Station housing dispute sparks union protest
The Police Officers' Union of Rethymno Prefecture has expressed strong opposition to plans to relocate the Anogeia Police Station into prefabricated containers. The union argues that the current building is deemed unsuitable, but moving officers to containers undermines their dignity and professional working conditions.
In a public statement, the union challenged authorities to provide a permanent housing solution rather than temporary structures. They noted that containers have already been used for local schools and the health center, questioning why essential pillars of society—security, education, and health—are being relegated to such facilities.
As an alternative, the union suggested that if the municipality cannot secure dignified and safe housing, authorities should consider abolishing the Anogeia Police Station entirely. In such a scenario, they propose that the area be served by the Perama Police Station, with the existing personnel being transferred there to ensure a functional reorganization of local policing.
