Anonymous lists targeting businesses in Brazil spark boycotts

Anonymous messages circulating on WhatsApp in the Brazilian municipalities of Jaraguá do Sul and Faxinal have caused tension among local business owners. The unverified lists claim to identify establishments that support the Workers' Party (PT) or the candidacy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for 2026.

In Jaraguá do Sul, at least 33 businesses have been named in an updated list. Several owners, including those of Restaurante Musse and Restaurante e Lanchonete Mime, have issued public statements repudiating the claims. They emphasize that their businesses maintain political neutrality and have not authorized the use of their names to suggest partisan affiliations.

In Faxinal, approximately 50 establishments were targeted. Local entrepreneurs and rural owners have categorically denied any political declarations, stating they prioritize neutrality to protect their businesses and employees from potential boycotts. Some listed businesses reported direct contradictions, such as managers who have worked for opposing political figures, highlighting the inaccuracy of the messages.
