Anora arrives on Netflix amid Oscar controversy in Brazil
The film ‘Anora’, written and directed by Sean Baker, has arrived on Netflix following its performance at the 2025 Oscars. The production, which earned five awards, has sparked significant controversy in Brazil regarding the Best Actress category.
Many Brazilian viewers expressed dissatisfaction on social media after Mikey Madison won the award instead of Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres for her role in ‘Ainda Estou Aqui’. This backlash included personal attacks against Madison and negative comments regarding ‘Anora’. In response, Fernanda Torres called for respect toward the winner during a press conference, stating, “Brazil is very passionate. I wanted to ask to only send love to Madison. Please, only send love. That woman is very nice.”
‘Anora’ follows the story of Ani, a Las Vegas stripper who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. The film’s release follows the historic achievement of ‘Ainda Estou Aqui’, which won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, marking Brazil’s first victory in that category.
