Apollon Limassol defeats Anorthosis amid VAR controversy
Apollon Limassol secured a 3-1 victory over Anorthosis Famagusta in a Cypriot First Division match, marked by significant officiating controversy. Goals from Gary Rodrigues and two from Allen Obbold secured the win for Apollon, while Kiko scored for Anorthosis.
Anorthosis management and coach Nestor El Maestro expressed intense frustration regarding the performance of referee Mario Christoforou and the VAR official. The club highlighted three critical incidents: a missed foul on Andreas Chrysostomou during Apollon's second goal, the decision to disallow a goal by Da Cruz following a VAR review, and a penalty awarded to Apollon that the club believes was called too easily.
Anorthosis intends to file a formal complaint with the Cypriot Football Association (CFA) regarding these decisions. Meanwhile, Apollon coach Hernán Losada noted that while the team achieved its first win, improvements are needed in defensive stability and integrating younger players.
